Day 9 - Groups A & B draw to a close

The results from day 9 of TFWC2014 are available on the 'Fixtures and results' page and the group tables have been updated.

Day 9 saw the final group matches for Groups A and B. With the top 2 qualifiers already decided in both groups, today was about who would progress as group winners and who would get a consolation win (and with it a possible 'lucky loser' place in the last 16 under Rule 13).

In Group A, the much-fancied Cameroon (Mazars) rested star striker Nick Sell and paid the price as Brazil (Hill Dickinson) beat them to win the group. Chile (Ridge) completed a clean sweep in Group B with their third convincing victory, brushing aside the previously unbeaten Netherlands (Merseytravel). That combination of results sets up a delicious tie in the last 16 between two of the strongest and most entertaining teams in the tournament, Cameroon (Mazars) and Chile (Ridge). Brazil (Hill Dickinson) against Netherlands (Merseytravel) should be a similarly tight match-up.

We did however wave goodbye (at least until the World Cup Final Party) to Croatia (Santander) and Spain (Roland Dransfield PR), each of whom put up a spirited effort but fell just short. First wins for Mexico (Ico Energy) and Australia (Land Registry) mean they must now hope that other results go their way so they can secure a 'lucky loser' place in the last 16.

Elsewhere, a rearranged Group E fixture saw France (AECOM) get their first points on the board with victory over Switzerland (Hill Dickinson B), although Switzerland remain above France on goal difference.
