Day 11 - high drama in Sao Paulo

The results from day 11 of TFWC2014 are available on the 'Fixtures and results' page and the group tables have been updated.

Day 11 took TFWC drama and emotion to a completely new level. Honduras (CRL) started the day with 6 points on the board and a 3 point cushion at the top of Group E, but a damaging defeat to Switzerland (Hill Dickinson B) left Honduras in second place and needing Ecuador (Liverpool BID Company) to take at least a point from France (AECOM). France needed to beat Ecuador to progress and Ecuador still harboured thoughts of 3rd place and the chance of progressing to the knock-out stages as a 'lucky loser'. The watching Honduras players thought they were safe with Ecuador leading France 8-6 with 30 seconds to go, but the comeback of all comebacks saw France rattle in 4 late goals to break Honduran and Ecuadorian hearts.

So, Switzerland (Hill Dickinson B) finish top of Group E, with France (AECOM) progressing as runners-up. Since Switzerland cannot progress because of rule 13, the best third place team from any of the 8 groups will now take their place in the round of 16. As matters stand with 6 groups completed, the third placed team with the best record is currently Honduras (CRL), which would only be fitting. We do however say goodbye to Ecuador (Liverpool BID Company), but they go home with their pride intact after their valiant effort today.

Iran (Sutcliffe) had already booked their place in the last 16 and will progress as group winners. The excitement in Group F was provided by the winner-takes-all clash between Nigeria (Kier) and Argentina (Keppie Massie), where a late rally by Nigeria was good enough to secure the very first draw of the tournament, but not quite good enough to progress due to Argentina's superior goal difference.

With Iran (Sutcliffe) and Argentina (Keppie Massie) through to the next stage, we say goodbye to Bosnia (Draw & Code). Nigeria (Kier), with 4 points, will hope to take the final 'lucky loser' space if Hill Dickinson C finish in the top 2 in Group H tomorrow, but that means that Costa Rica (Liverpool Echo) and Australia (Land Registry) can no longer progress.
