Day 6 - Redemption for England

The results from day 6 of TFWC2014 are available on the 'Fixtures and results' page and the group tables have been updated.

Ivory Coast (Active Profile) became the first team to be eliminated from the tournament (despite 'Lucky Rule 13'), by losing not one but two matches today. After a brave but ultimately fruitless effort against a Colombia (GVA) team determined to get their first win on the board, Ivory Coast agreed to play their final group match against Greece to ensure that Greece had a match when Japan failed to show. That match resulted in Greece (Mason Owen) shattering the previous records for most goals in a match and biggest winning margin as they cruised to a majestic 25-1 victory. Assuming that Greece are awarded a 10-0 walkover win against Japan they will progress as group winners, leaving Japan and Colombia to fight it out for second place when they play in the final round of group matches next Wednesday.

The big story of the day was always going to be England v Uruguay in Group D. Both teams having lost their opening matches, it was a 'must win' match for both teams. Media attention in the run-up had focused on one England player in particular, a forward from whom big things had been expected before the tournament but who hadn't really performed against Italy, to the extent that his club side had given him a free transfer to Manchester in the wake of that disappointing opening defeat (see http://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/news/archive/16037-worthington-moves-to-cbre-manchester-as-russell-departs.html). This time, however, a charged-up Mark Worthington inspired his England (CBRE) side to an ultimately comfortable victory over Uruguay (City Central BID) that keeps England's hopes of qualification very much alive but leaves Uruguay's prospects hanging by a thread.

The day's other match saw Italy (Suttons & Robertsons) retain their firm grip on Group D with a fine victory over a stubborn Costa Rica (Liverpool Echo) team, who nonetheless remain in second place on goal difference from England.
